New Changes as Students Return on January 3rd
Written by Melissa Nigh, District Administrator

When students return to school on Tuesday, January 3rd they will notice some positive changes at school. First, all students will be issued a student ID card which will include a cafeteria bar code on the reverse side.  When students in grades 6 through 12 go through the cafeteria line, they will scan their bar code to charge their food service account.  Students will be responsible for their own card and will be charged $5 for a replacement card if they lose it. Students in PreK through 5 will have their student ID cards managed by their classroom teacher.

Over the holiday break the district replaced the Doors at entrance A and added a new entry system. The glass above the doors was also removed and will provide an energy savings to the District.  Push bars were installed to meet fire code regulations on doors A, B, and C. Along with the new look; an access key card and buzzer system has been installed on door A and a keyless entry system was installed on doors E, G, and H. This was done with the assistance of the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) grant the district received in conjunction with the Mellen Police Department. This organization promotes safe schools and communities.

Once school is in session the front doors will be locked for the safety and security of our students and staff.  Anyone wishing to enter the building during school hours will need to press the intercom button (located to the right of the main doors) in order to make contact with the Student Services Secretary. She will be able to hear and see you through a closed circuit video camera. After the Student Services Secretary has made contact with you, she will open the door and you can proceed with regular sign-in procedures.  This is a big change to the Mellen Community; however it is a necessary step in continuing to ensure the safety of our children and staff.

The world around us is changing and we must remain proactive and diligent in our first and foremost responsibility: the safety of our children.  The District has the responsibility to evaluate and implement changes that will best fit the needs of our students, staff, and community.  Mellen is one of the last few districts to make this security change in our area and we are proud that we can strengthen the safety of our students! Thank you for the much appreciated support and continued patience while we make positive changes for our school and community. If you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact District Administrator, Melissa Nigh at (715) 274-3601 ext. 402.
