GarageBand Compositions

By: Juli O'Donnell - Music Instructor

At the end of March, the sixth grade band began exploring the use of GarageBand by breaking into groups and creating their own musical compositions.   Each group was required to use the sound loops and recordings in GarageBand to create a song lasting 32 measures, or about a minute and a half.   They also recorded their own live sound, which could have included an instrument, sound effect, or vocal effect.   These were the creations that the groups presented to the class and received a critique by their classmates.

Academics at Mellen School

Mrs. Nortunen’s Kindergarten class will begin talking about the current president and past presidents.  They will take a look inside the White House through books and posters, and make portraits of George Washington.  On February 22nd Justina Zeman RDH, a dental hygienist will visit the PreK-2 classrooms to talk about ways to keep our teeth clean and healthy for "National Children's Dental Health Month!"

Mrs. Meierotto’s 1st grade class just started a project; writing autobiographies.  The students are currently sharing pictures from home with one another and writing about the pictures.  They will then compile this information to write a short autobiography.

Mrs. Colver’s fifth grade class had the opportunity to watch a live performance of "The Diary of Anne Frank" at Stage North in Washburn.  The students were completely captivated by the play and gave a lot of thought to the background information about the Second World War and the Holocaust.

On February 29, the fifth grade will be attending an ITV class on "Breaking the Color Barrier".  This session should fit in beautifully with our Anne Frank experience, and our upcoming unit on the Civil War.

The 7th and 8th grade Language Arts students are learning how to conduct formal research and will be writing research papers.  They will be using primary and secondary resources and conducting interviews with local professionals and experts in fields of their choosing. They will also be teaming up with an at school expert for guidance during this process.  Students will be doing a lot of cross-curricular learning during this unit.  We are shaping up to become great 21st Century researchers.

In Middle School Science classes, the 6th grade just finished their inventions and presented them to their fellow classmates.  7th and 8th grade students just finished research projects on a variety of organisms from pinworms to starfish.  The Research and Design class tested their airplanes.  Noah Zakovec and Daniel Block won for the plane that flew the farthest. Two teams, Kamryn Lee & Tyler White and Lucas Vitek & Jordan Koosmann, tied for the most unusual design.

The High School Community Service students just taught a lesson in astronomy to the K-5th grade and gave them a tour through the StarLab - a blow-up planetarium.  The Community Service students also took the 1st- 4th grade snowshoeing in the school forest and taught them about the amazing properties of water which make it necessary for life.

The Physics students are preparing cardboard sleds and have challenged the Charter School students to a speed and distance competition.  The event has been postponed due to the lack of snow.

The Physical Science students just completed the annual thermos competition.  Each student constructed a thermos and tested them.  Natalie Jokinen took 1st, Thane Peltonen took 2nd, and Hannah Juoni took 3rd place.  Each year the thermoses get better.  Great job everyone!
